Kokoda Track

From beginning to end, this expedition was perfection in all aspects of its organisation. Particular praise must be given to the trek leader Mr Lawrence Applebee. His dedication, knowledge and leadership abilities were instrumental in its success.

Kamchatka is a long peninsula (approx 1200kms) occupying an area of 472,300 sq. km, (larger than France) between the latitudes of 50 and 65 degrees north. To imagine it’s location, one should think of territory north of Japan and the Bering Sea,Kamchatka is not part of Siberia, but one of a number of territories on the eastern, Pacific seaboard known as Russian Far East.Kamchatka’s mountain ridges - Sredinny, Valaginsky, Ganalsky and Kumroch - stretch from the north to the south giving the peninsula the shape of a giant fish. There are more than 160 volcanoes on the peninsula (29 of them are active), lying on the Great Pacific “ring of fire”. The extraordinary diversity of landscape, from the high volcanic peaks to the coastal plains combined with maritime and arctic weather and underground heat have created a mixture of twenty climate zones. This diversity of climate and habitat has in turn, contributed to the great variety and richness of flora and fauna on the Peninsula.

The Weather in Russia

The Kamchatka climate is as diverse as its wildlife. You will find a moderate maritime zone on either coast, a continental zone in the central valley with four distinct seasons, and an arctic zone in the northern reaches of the peninsula. The Northern summer (mid-June-August), is a time of rapid growth and flowering as all of the flora and fauna hurry to complete a year’s worth of activity before the return of the winter snows.

Being close to the Arctic Circle, the summertime days are long. It can rain, sleet or snow during summer, and there may still be snow on the ground, particularly on the higher peaks.
