Rwanda is a landlocked republic in Equatorial Africa. This small but beautiful country is situated on the eastern rim of the Albertine Rift, the western arm of the Great Rift Valley. With such a large proportion of the country being mountainous, most of the country is cultivated in hillside terracing. As the most densely populated country in Africa with more than 10 million people, Rwanda needs to utilize all its land where possible. Situated to on the watershed between the Nile and the Congo, the highest peak is Karisimbi (4,507m) in the volcanic Virunga chain protected by the Volcanoes National Park. The largest body of water is Lake Kivu, but there are other numerous lakes around the country. Primarily a subsistence agriculture economy, Rwanda nonetheless produces for export some of the finest tea and coffee in the world. Other industries include sugar, fishing and flowers for export. Rwanda has been known for the wrong reasons in recent decades with the terrible atrocities associated with the 1994 genocide. Since then the country is back on the road to recovery and still provides a safe haven for the mountain gorillas
