Mount Cook Aoraki Ascent

As for the Mt Cook trip, it was absolutely brilliant. Thoroughly enjoyed it and the 10 day course taught me a lot! I'm already thinking of what I would like to climb next.... Possibly something in the Himalayas. Just need to keep up the fitness (and save up a lot of money!!).

Alpine Climbing Course

Experience is imperative before tackling any major mountaineering ascent. This comprehensive climbing course has been designed specifically for fit and motivated people who want to learn modern-day alpine climbing techniques and improve their basic mountaineering knowledge. The 10-day course focuses on advancing your technical skills and developing a climbing strategy pertinent to alpine style mountaineering. In the company of professional NZMGA/IFMGA mountain guides you will gain valuable experience through climbing a variety of alpine routes as well as develop skills in mountain navigation, weather training and crevasse rescue training. Upon the successful completion of this course you will have learnt safe climbing practices and be capable of utilising your skills to attempt ascents of many of the major peaks within New Zealand and beyond.

Brief Itinerary

DAY 1 Meet in Wanaka, briefing and gear check then drive to Mt Cook or Fox Glacier
DAY 2 Light plane flight in to the mountains, begin alpine climbing training
DAY 3 Traverse Grey Peak
DAY 4 Mt Von Bollow and Davis Snowfield
DAY 5 Mountain navigation and weather training
DAY 6 Climb out to bivvy en route to Minarets
DAY 7 Climb the Minarets and descend to bivvy
DAY 8 Crevasse rescue training, return to hut
DAY 9 Descend to Chancellor hut, fly out to Fox Glacier
DAY 10 Ice climbing on Fox Glacier, drive to Wanaka where trip concludes
